New UNAIDS strategy calls for decriminalisation of sex work, same sex acts, HIV transmission, and drug use. Echoing evidence from various research, and practices globally, UNAIDS has specifically called for the decriminalisation of sex work – especially in Africa where 70% of sex work is criminalised, in one form or the other – saying “Decriminalisation of sex work could prevent people from acquiring HIV through combined effects on violence, police harassment, safer work environments, and HIV transmission pathways.”
